Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death in children under the age of 14. The majority of drowning and near-drowning incidents occur in residential swimming pools and in open water sites. Children can drown in as little as one inch of water which means they are at risk and can drown in wading pools, bathtubs, buckets, diaper pails, toilets, spas and hot tubs.
The Safe Kids Greater Houston Water Safety Coalition began in February 2001, under the lead agency Texas Children’s Hospital, to help protect children from drowning by building public awareness for the need for water safety and the use of life jackets, especially in minority and non-English-speaking groups. Drowning is quick, silent, and deadly. Learn more About Us, who we are, what we do, and how we work together in our communities.
